The President Fellowship fulfills one of FWN's goals to support our mission -

Build the Filipina community's pipeline of qualified leaders to increase the odds that some will rise to the "president" position in all sectors.

FWN Fellows Program

The program is designed to provide students, recent graduates and motivated individuals seeking career development through involvement with the Filipina Women's Network (FWN) as well as an opportunity for increased learning of the programs and initiatives to advance the activities, careers and status of Filipina women in the United States.

The Fellowship Program lasts from six months to one year. The FWN Board will screen interested applicants to determine academic or personal interest in Filipino culture and women's issues, relevant experience and career development goals.

Currently, the Filipina Women's Network is looking to fill one fellowship position to replace Fellow Leah Laxamana who is ending her fellowship for the 2011-2012 period.

Filipina Women’s Network to receive a TOP HAT Award for 2012

Philippine American Business Improvement Development unanimously selected Marily Mondejar and Elena Manghas to receive a TOP HAT (The Outstanding Professionals & High Achieving Teams) Award for 2012 in recognition of their achievements as highly respected and successful professionals and their contributions to their community. The awards gala will be held in July, details to follow.

U.N. Aims at Major Global Conference on Women in 2015

As the race towards gender equality moves at an exceedingly slow pace, the United Nations is calling for a major international conference on women in 2015 - 20 years after a landmark meeting in Beijing in 1995.

The proposal, made jointly by Secretary-General Ban Ki moon and the President of the General Assembly Ambassador Nassir Abdulaziz Al- Nasser of Qatar, will go before the 193-member General Assembly for final approval. View article.

DFA helps husband of slain Filipina in US school shooting secure visa

The Department of Foreign Affairs is helping the husband of Kathleen Ping-Vicuña secure a US visitor’s visa so he could attend her burial and grant his wish to “see his wife for the last time.”

Raul Hernandez, the DFA spokesman, has assured the government would “do its share in providing the necessary assistance” to Christian Vicuña, whose wife Kathleen was one of seven people killed on April 2 in a school shooting in Oakland, California. View article.

The enrolled bill, according to Jean Enriquez of the Coalition against Trafficking in Women-Asia Pacific (CATW-AP), “mocks women in the Philippines and around the world, as only the women are left as criminals, while the bill decriminalizes pimps.” View article.

Nominations to the Migration Advocacy and Media (MAM) Awards 2012 are now formally open.

Conceived in 2011 by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) for the Celebration of the Month of Overseas Filipinos and International Migrants Day in the Philippines (December and December 18, respectively every year), Migration Advocacy and Media (MAM) Awards aim to recognize the significant role of the media in information dissemination and advocacy of news and concerns related to migration and development. Deadline for Submission of Applications to Fil-Am Youth Leadership Program Extended

The Philippine Embassy and Consulates General in the United States wish to announce that the April 15, 2012 deadline to submit applications for the Filipino American Youth Leadership Program has been extended to April 30, 2012.

The names of the 10 chosen participants will be announced on May 15, 2012 in the website of the Philippine Embassy, www.philippineembassy-usa.org, where the application form may also be downloaded. Questions concerning the search may be sent toembassy@philippinesusa.org.

Tax-deductible contributions to the California Arts Council

Voluntary, tax-deductible contributions can be made to the California Arts Council with your 2011 tax return.

You will find a list of optional contributions, including the Arts Council Fund, which is coded "415" at Line 110 on the last page of your California tax form. Your gift can be made in any amount – even as little as $1. You can add it to your state taxes and deduct it next year from your federal taxes for 2012.

If at least $250,000 doesn’t come in from this, the State Legislature will eliminate this option for the Arts in the future.

The Surgeon General’s (SG) Video Contest for Youth and Young Adults

For the Surgeon General's Video Contest on Tobacco, teens and young adults are invited to submit original videos in which they speak up about tobacco and tell us why they aren't using it. Videos will be accepted in four categories:

ages 13-17 (English)

ages 13-17 (Spanish)

ages 18-25 (English)

ages 18-25 (Spanish)

Review the contest rulesbefore submitting videos. The deadline for submissions is 11pm EDT April 20, 2012. There will be a $1,000 grand prize winner in each category (four total prizes), and three $500 runner-up winners in each category (12 total prizes).

This contest is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in conjunction with the Surgeon General's 2012 report on tobacco use.

Engaging the South: White House Initiative Southeast Regional Action Summit, Atlanta, Georgia

On March 16, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) held its first ever Southeast Regional Action Summit in Atlanta, Georgia, where community leaders met with government representatives to draw out a plan for AAPIs in the South.

The state of Georgia now boasts more than 300,000 AAPIs, from schoolchildren to business owners and professionals in science and the arts. The growth has been robust, and with time, the expanding AAPI population will make its voice heard more and more. View article.

Health Care Reform is Working for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Communities

On March 23, the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) joined health advocates from around the nation in celebrating the second anniversary of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
“Since 2010, our communities have rallied in support of health care reform and worked with policy makers to ensure the law meets the needs of diverse communities,” said Kathy Lim Ko, APIAHF president and CEO. “Health care reform is working for our communities, such as the family that previously struggled to pay for their son’s cancer medications and now has access to better coverage, to the small business owner who can now afford to provide health insurance for her employees.” View article.

George Zimmerman's shooting of Trayvon Martin, an African American teenager, reveals a history of racism in Sanford, FL that has stubbornly refused to die. Weeks after the shooting, the Sanford police department is slow to release details of the shooting and, more surprisingly, has not arrested George Zimmerman, a man who has a history of violence.

We urge you to sign this petition to protect private citizens from gun violence and inept law enforcement. Florida's Attorney General Pam Bondi must step in and provide justice for Trayvon Martin, his family, and the community. Sign petition.

A Day in Philippine History: March 4, 1879, Rosa Sevilla was born in Tondo, Manila
The Kahimyang Project

On March 4, 1879, Rosa Sevilla, educator, writer and one of the notable suffragists in Asia who fought for the Filipino women's right to vote, was born in Tondo, Manila.

She pursued her desired profession of being a teacher and graduated as "maestra superior" at Assumption College. Together with Pura Villanueva-Kalaw and Pilar Hidalgo-Lim, she lobbied and campaigned for woman suffrage.

Hence, since April 30, 1937, Filipino women have been granted the right to vote and to be voted in elective office, which has led to the election of two women presidents for the country. View article.

Report: 2011 National Census of Domestic Violence Services
API Institute on Domestic Violence

An annual survey conducted by the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) provides insight into domestic violence services in the United States. On September 15, 2011 – one 24-hour period – domestic violence victim advocates served more than 67,000 victims and answered more than 22,000 emergency hotline calls.

This annual snapshot shows that shelters and programs continue to find a way to help almost the same number of victims in one day as in past years – a staggering 67,399 adults and children. However across United States there were 1,040 more unmet requests reported in the same day than in September 2011. View article.

Democrats in the U.S. Senate opened a new line of attack in their quest to win critical support from women voters in the Nov. 6 elections, calling for quick renewal of a program aimed at protecting women from domestic violence.

The call came from six female Democratic senators, accompanied by moderate Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski. The normally bipartisan issue has gotten entangled in election-year tensions that have Democrats and Republicans squaring off on nearly every piece of legislation.

The domestic violence bill, which could come up for Senate debate this month, is the latest in a series of fights that have erupted in recent weeks on social issues centered on women. View article.

Philippine Ambassador Jose L. The Philippines has been noted as having one of the smallest gender disparities in the world. The gender gap has been closed in both health and education; the country has had two female presidents (Corazon Aquino from 1986-1992 and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from 2001-2010); and had its first woman Supreme Court justice (Cecilia Muñoz Palma in 1973) before the United States had one (Sandra Day O’Connor in 1981). Help API Women and Girls in Arizona

Anti-choice advocates and legislators have started to use a deeply offensive tactic that squarely targets the bodies of Asian American women in their quest to deny women the right to abortion care. Abortion bans that target so called “race-selective” and sex-selective abortions have been introduced in Congress and in 15 states across the country. In Congress right now, the deceptively named Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (PRENDA) actually tries to amend our country’s civil rights laws to ban abortion. PRENDA singles out Asian-American women and other women of color for attack, and National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF) has been playing a lead role in fighting it.

NAPAWF Opposes Abortion Ban Targeting Asian American Women

The National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF) strongly opposes H.R. 3541, the “Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act” (PRENDA). The House Judiciary Committee today reported the bill favorably, with 20 Republicans voting for and 13 Democrats voting against it. If enacted, PRENDA would ban abortion based on race or sex. In the fall of 2011, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders launched the “What’s your story?” video challenge. The challenge aimed to highlight the personal stories of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) across the country who have impacted their community through their dreams, experiences, and dedication to a cause.

Ultimately, 200 unique and inspiring stories were received. Each video shines a light on the important work happening around the country and they remind us what makes this community so strong. From these submissions, the top 11 video entrees were chosen based on strength of content and creativity.

For victims of domestic abuse who come forward, there are two forms of relief that allow them to obtain legal status on their own. One is the Violence Against Women Act, enacted in 1994 and widely used in the past several years, which permits battered women to apply for work permits and later for legal residency. The other is the “U visa,” in use since 2007, which allows victims of sexual assault and other crimes to win legal residency if they cooperate with police and the judicial system to help prosecute the offender. The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) Santa Clara Valley Chapter in partnership with San Jose State University's Filipino-American student organization Akbayan will be co-sponsoring a book reading and signing of Peter Jamero's new book, "Vanishing Filipino Americans: The Bridge Generation." Special guest will be Robert Ragsac who will read excerpts from his essays.

About the author: Peter Jamero, the eldest son of Filipino immigrants, was born in 1930 in Oakdale CA and raised in a Filipino farm worker camp operated by his parents in nearby Livingston. Despite not speaking English until the first grade and without the benefit of affirmative action programs (yet to be enacted), he went on to a successful career as a top level executive directing multi‐million dollar health and human service programs in federal, state, and local government and in the private non‐profit sector. He also served on the faculty of the medical school at the University of Washington. Now retired, he lives in Atwater CA.
