A 58-year-old Taiwanese man was jailed for a year and six months by Changhua District Court on Friday after being convicted of molesting and sexually assaulting a Filipino domestic worker in 2015.
The defendant surnamed Hsiao lived with his mother and the Filipina helper, who was hired by Hsiao's elder brother in September 2015 to care for their elderly mother, China Times reported.
Hsiao was married but his wife was reportedly absent most of the time, as she preferred to stay in her home in mainland China.
The court heard that Hsiao first attempted to impress the maid by preparing a mobile phone, prepaid SIM cards and high-end skincare products as gifts after she arrived.
On September 20, after taking the victim to a specialty shop and buying her two sets of bras and underpants worth NT$3,800, Hsiao ordered the Filipina to try them on for him to see at home. He then fondled her breasts and the maid did not stop his caress, as she feared being fired if she rejected him.
On the evening of December 5, while the elderly mother was showering, Hsiao entered the maid's private compartment after drinking alcohol and ordered her not to shout. He said he had to caress her.
The man lifted her top and bra up to fondle and lick her breasts. Hsiao then proceeded to sexually assault the maid by inserting his fingers into her private part with his right hand.
The victim decided to tell her brother in the Philippines about the incidents and he encouraged her to dial the 1955 counseling and protection hotline set up to assist foreign workers.
After these bad experiences, the Filipina, who was originally granted permission to work up till February 2018, returned home on January 18, 2016.
