According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 32.9% of women and 27.3% of men in California experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes. 

The monument created by English-born sculptor Steven Whyte shows Grandma Haksoon Kim, the first "comfort woman" who broke her silence in 1991, in a traditional Korean traditional dress, looking at three life-sized girl statues in traditional Korean, Chinese and Filipino dresses, holding hands on top of a cylinder. The memorial site is at the St. Mary’s Square Annex at California Street in San Francisco.

“I feel like I now have a responsibility,” Edith Winterhalter said. “It’s really big, and I’m still not internalizing [the award], to be honest. I’m now [under] a bigger microscope and have to be more socially responsible on a larger scale.”

Dina Dela Paz- Stalder has gone beyond lip service regarding healthy eating. She decided to create her own healthy dishes using ingredients that help local farmers. She went to Sagada and bought brown rice from local farmers. “I love the Philippines,” she said. “Let’s help our countrymen. We’ve forgotten them. Although I’m not rich, I never dreamed of getting rich in other countries. I know I’m sharing good things with our kabababayan.”
