As Filipinos in the United States, we are at a crossroads. The San Francisco Bay Area is home to nearly a quarter of the entire population of Filipino Americans in the United States. Unfortunately, according to FAJ's recent Filipino Electorate Project, it seems that only about 50% of the eligible voting population in the Bay Area's counties are registered to vote. What is interesting, however, is the high percentage of those registered to vote are naturalized citizens. Let's change that.

Opportunities for organizing for northern California Filipinos are increasing. Yet Filipinos aren't registered at the levels they can be. 

Approximately 50% of Filipinos eligible to register are not registered to vote. In only two counties - San Francisco and Kings Counties - are more than 50% of Filipinos eligible to register, taking advantage of this right. 

Let's change that.

Filipinas to Watch: Filipina-American Journalist Elaine Quijano to Moderate U.S. Vice Presidential Debate

CBSN anchor Elaine Quijano will moderate the Oct. 4 debate between U.S. Vice Presidential candidates Tim Kaine and Mike Pence at Longwood University in Farmville, VA.

The Chicago-based journalist becomes the first anchor of a digital news service and the FIRST Filipina woman to land a moderator slot in one of the national general-election debates organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates.

The forum will begin at 9 p.m. EST and run through 10:30 p.m. EST without commercial breaks. The debate will be broadcast live on major TV networks, including ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. It will also be shown on C-SPAN, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC and online at ABC News, Buzzfeed News, CBS News,  PBS or Politico.

In recognition of her achievements, California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye (U.S. FWN100™ '07) received the 2016 Morton A. Brody Distinguished Judicial Service Award. The honor has been given biennially since 2001 to “an outstanding United States federal or state judge who embodies the qualities of integrity, compassion, humanity, and judicial craftsmanship;” qualities which underscored Judge Brody’s life.
