The Department of Homeland Security published an updated resource guide to clarify and further explain the role of certifying agencies in the U and T visa application process. This guide addresses concerns, answers common questions, and provides accurate information on signing I-918B and I-914B forms for federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial law enforcement, prosecutors, judges, and other government agencies qualified to sign U visa certifications such as the EEOC, federal and state labor departments, adult and child protective services, and any other eligible agencies that have criminal, civil, or administrative investigative or prosecutorial authority. FWN Board Member Thelma Boac (US FWN100™ '07, pictured second from right) was recently recognized by the Ivy Rose Community Foundation and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ETA Rho Omega Chapter for her outstanding community involvement as Board Trustee of the Berryessa School District and her 37 years as an educator and school administrator in San Jose, California. Thelma was selected as one of the 2015 Distinguished Women awardees. A reception was held this past Saturday, November 29th at the San Jose Fairmont Hotel. Congratulations! Professor Glenda Bonifacio (Global FWN100™ '15) was recognized for her recent Global FWN100™ '15 Award in the Thought Leader & Visionary category by the University of Lethbridge. “I was both surprised and humbled when I learned the Filipina Women’s Network had selected me to receive this award,” says Bonifacio. “I am proud to be honoured by an organization that is dedicated to increasing awareness of the activities, careers and status of Filipina women around the world.” Bonifacio has been a professor in the U of L’s Department of Women and Gender Studies since 2005 and her research has focused on Filipino women’s migration in Canada and Australia, intersections of gender, development and globalization, and migration and citizenship. In addition to her teaching and research responsibilities, Bonifacio spearheaded a local book drive to help schools in Tacloban after Typhoon Yolanda struck in 2013 and she continues to work on this community project with ReadWorld Foundation. This past summer, she instructed the first ever U of L field course to Tacloban. California State Board of Equalization (SBOE) Member Fiona Ma, celebrated the close of October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness month, by presenting her first SHEro Equalizer Award to FWN CEO & Founder, Marily Mondejar. This award is given to an individual who exemplifies the dedication and drive of a fearless female leader. Their role as an “equalizer” is to be a tireless advocate for issues and causes to further expand women’s rights.

Philippine Senator Loren Legarda has been named the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction’s (UNISDR) Global Champion for Resilience. Legarda’s appointment was announced by Margareta Wahlstrom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, on November 30 at the Climate Vulnerable Forum High Level Meeting at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference or COP21. The senator, a regional champion for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation for Asia-Pacific since 2008, was recognized for being “an outspoken and consistent champion for the need to rethink development and work with all stakeholders and in many sectors to prevent and reduce risk,” Wahlstrom said in a speech delivered at the Paris conference.
